Balance
Last week I talked about perfection and how it's unattainable. What we aim for is perfect balance. Let's elaborate on that using an exercise I often do at the gym:
I'm upright, kneeling, and balancing on a large, inflatable workout ball. I hold a weighted ball in my hands and move it around in random directions; writing out my name, trying new angles. All while aiming to stay upright and balanced on the ball. It’s very subtle, but every moment the weighted ball shifts, almost every part of the body has to adjust in order to not fall off the ball.
It’s a great exercise for the body and a great reminder for life. Perfection is unattainable. But we can, in every moment, have perfect balance.
Just like the weighted ball shifting positions, life constantly throws us uncontrollable changes of expectation.
Are you adaptive, creative, and stable enough to adjust moment by moment? That’s the key. It’s not about holding fast and addressing demands in a one-size-fits-all kind of way.
In order to stay on the ball in life, we’ve got to be able to gracefully adjust and meet each new moment in the most relevant way to maintain balance.
